Gautam Gambhir named as the best batsman of 2008
Adding one more feather to his crown, opening Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir edged out his partner Virender Sehwag to be named the Castrol Cricketer of the Year 2008 at a sparkling function in Mumbai on Thursday.
The Delhi batsman scored over 1000 runs in 2008 (collectively from test matches and ODIs). As a result, he was also awarded with the "Best Batsman Of The Year" award also. Gambhir received Rs five lakh and a trophy.
Commenting on this significant achievement, Gauti said: "I never thought I would score 1000 runs in both forms of the game especially in Test cricket because at one point of time I wasn't even there in the Test team. But I think the Sri Lanka series was the turning point for my Test career."
The 27-year-old batsman has also been declared fit for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy to be held in South Africa.
The left-handed batsman missed the triangular series in Sri Lanka.
Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh won the best bowler of the year award.
Dashing batsman Sehwag and Indian captain M S Dhoni were declared the Test and One-Day cricketers of the same year.
