Food Security Bill passed

Sharad-PawarThe Cabinet and the Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) has cleared the Food Security Bill. The information was given by the agriculture minister Sharad Pawar.

As per the bill, every person living below the poverty line will be eligible to receive 25 kilogram of wheat or rice every month. The grains would be available for as little as Rs. 3. This would not change as per the market rates.

Talking to media, the Agriculture Minister said that the since EGoM had no authority of taking a final decision on the bill, it was ultimately cleared by the cabinet.

This bill was important because even after being the third largest economy in the world, India is not able to feed its entire population.

But the concerns are whether with the current rate of growth of agriculture and its system of distraction, food will be able to reach the needy.

Meanwhile, the food price index dropped by 1.1 per cent for the week ending March 6. This happened because of the fall in prices of pulses and vegetable. But still, the food inflation is very high and it is receiving serious opposition from various groups of people.
