Food inflation reaches 12.21 per cent
The food inflation in India rose 12.21 per cent during the week ended October 22 as the prices for vegetables, pulses, fruits and milk rose in the markets.
The food inflation, which is measured by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), was at 11.43 per cent in the previous week. The food inflation was at 13.55 per cent in the same week last year, according to the latest data released by the government.
Vegetables become expensive by 28.89 per cent on a year-on-year basis, while Pulses grew costlier by 11.65 per cent, fruits by 11.63 per cent and milk by 11.73 per cent. Eggs, meat and fish became expensive by 13.36 per cent and cereal prices were up 4.13 per cent.
On the other hand, onions became 20.33 cheaper and wheat prices were reduced by 1.54 per cent. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said expressed concerns over the rise in inflation but attributed this to the festive season.
"Inflation is still a matter of grave concern. This is also the affect of the festive season. November onward, the real trend for the remaining four months of the fiscal will be available," he said.
