First Uterus transplant conducted at Cleveland Clinic fails: Report
On Wednesday, the Cleveland Clinic announced that the first patient in the United States who received a uterus transplant suffered complications and the doctors had to remove the uterus.
The 26-year-old woman received uterus transplant last month from a dead donor after undergoing a nine-hour-long operation. The transplant was the first ever operation conducted in the United States.
In an official statement, surgeons at the Cleveland clinic said that they are saddened to disclose that their patient, Lindsey has lately experienced an unexpected complication that forced the removal of her transplanted uterus.
The cause and the situation of the complication are under review so far. The clinic mentioned that Lindsey was doing well and will recover soon.
In a statement, she said, “I just wanted to express my gratitude towards all of my doctors. They acted very quickly to ensure my health and safety. Unfortunately, I did lose uterus to complications. However, I am doing okay and appreciate all your prayers and good thoughts”.
Previously in this week before losing organ, while sitting in a wheelchair with her husband, Blake, standing beside, she said that at the age of 1, she came to know that she would never have children and since then she has been praying that God would let her experience pregnancy. She said that she has reached at the beginning of that journey. They have three adopted boys.
In November, the Cleveland Clinic announced a research study, under which it would conduct uterus transplants on 10 women having uterine factor infertility (UFI). It mentioned on Wednesday that the study is ongoing.
UFI is a condition wherein a woman can’t get pregnant because she doesn’t have a uterus, lost her uterus or possesses a uterus that isn’t functional anymore. Worldwide, 3% to 5% of women are suffering from this condition and uterus transplant could help them.
