FIFA looks to address vuvuzela noise in World Cup stadiums

FIFA looks to address vuvuzela noise in World Cup stadiums Johannesburg - The ruling body FIFA will look at addressing the deafening noise caused by South African fans blowing vuvuzelas at the Confederations Cup before the country hosts the 2010 World Cup finals.

"There will be discussions between FIFA and the Local Organizing Committee about the vuvuzelas but this won't happen until after the Confederations Cup," FIFA spokesman Nicholas Maingot said Thursday in Johannesburg.

European broadcasters have complained about the noise caused by the plastic trumpets while Spanish footballer Xabi Alonso has called for the instruments to be banned.

"The vuvuzelas are an annoyance and add nothing to the atmosphere, they should be banned," said Alonso after Spain's 1-0 victory over Iraq Wednesday in Bloemfontein.

However, FIFA president Joseph Blatter said the vuvuzelas were part and parcel of football in South Africa.

"That is what African and South Africa football is all about - noise, excitement, dancing, shouting and enjoyment. This is a celebration," he said. (dpa)
