FDA Must Ban Sale of Fun-Flavored E-Cigarettes to Minors, says Sen. Chuck Schumer
It has been reported that the senior United States senator from New York Chuck Schumer wants that the federal government must ban selling of e-cigarettes in 'fun flavors' like gummy bear and cotton candy to kids.
The member of the Democratic Party on Sunday said a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that a large number of high school and middle school students smoking artificial smokes rose over three times within a year. Presently almost 2.5 million teens smoke e-cigarettes, showed study.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should take action in order to stop the sale of these artificial smokes with flavors like candy, fruit and soft-drink, said Sen. Chuck Schumer.
"You're not marketing cigarettes using the flavors cotton candy and Swedish Fish when you're aiming at 45- to 50-year-olds", he said.
The senator even urged the FDA to finalize restrictions on the marketing of e-cigarettes to teenagers and children during an event Sunday.
Senators said e-cigarettes with such fun filled flavors attracts kids and can make them addicted for them.
The New York Democrat said on Sunday that the same marketing restrictions that apply to traditional tobacco products should also be made applicable on e-cigarettes.
He in a recent report cited that while traditional tobacco use is lowering among teens, but the use of e-cigarettes has went up tremendously.
Schumer told WCBS 880 that the manufacturers of e-cigarettes are crossing their line and are marketing these products to kids to get them addicted to smoking.
It was found that the FDA issued proposed regulations for e-cigarettes last year but has not yet implemented them.
