FCC’s ‘Open Internet’ rules to take effect on November 20
The new Open Internet rules of the US Federal Communications Commission are scheduled to be introduced on November, following a prolonged delay in their implementation.
The rules will govern the use of internet in the US and aims to balance consumer and content provider interests along with Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The FCC had published the rules in the Federal Register and had to face criticism including threats of congressional and court challenges.
Some had even suggested that the FCC is overstepping its authority in proposing such rules governing the use of internet in the country. The rules were made last year and were recently cleared by the White House's Office of Management and Budget, which allows the FCC to go ahead with their implementation.
Critics of the rules say that the government is trying to regulation a platform for expression through regulations.
