Environmental Group asks for Investigation into Climate-change Terms’ ban in Florida

Earlier, some environmental scientists in Florida said that their supervisors ordered them not to use terms 'climate change' and 'global warming' in their work. According to Florida governor Rick Scott, his administration did not ban environmental scientists from using the terms.

Now, an environmental group have requested for a state investigation to know more about the ban. On Tuesday, members of the group Forecast the Facts filed complaint with the Department of Environmental Protection's inspector-general. They urged the department to find the truth about the report.

The confusion about the ban started when the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting reported that Scott administration banned state environmental scientists from using the terms. The report also quoted some former employees who were saying that they were ordered not to use the terms in speeches and official reports. Since the report was released, the 45th Governor of Florida has been denying the allegations.

While talking to reporters on Tuesday in Tallahassee, Scott said, "Well, first off, that's not true. At our Department of Environmental Protection, there's lots of conversation about this issue. From my standpoint, like every issue, my goal is: Instead of talking about it, let's do something about it".

Chris Byrd, an attorney of Florida Department of Environmental Protection, told The Associated Press that some of the superiors told him not to use the terms at a staff meeting. According to Byrd, he was forced out of the agency in
2013. He said that supervisors had said that verbally and there was no written policy about the ban on the terms.

Brant Olson, Director of Forecast the Facts Campaign, said it is important to know how it all started. According to Olson, an investigation could tell who is telling the truth. Ban on such terms will not remove the real threat that the terms poses to coastal communities, Olson added.
