Elder Ambani may enter telecom business
After Anil Ambani, it is time for elder brother, Mukesh Ambani to set his eyes on the Indian telecom business.
Breaking the promise between the two brothers said that they would not compete with each other in their business areas, Mukesh now wants to use the opportunity provided by 3G.
Anil Ambani came into the telecom sector four years ago and started his company, Reliance Communications (RCom).
And the method that Mukesh has chosen is through acquisitions. And people close to the matter said that it is looking at taking over Idea.
Mukesh decided to take the step after the no-compete agreement between the brothers was annulled last week allowing them to enter into each others area. This also includes the gas business.
The news that first appeared on business newspaper, ET said that there is no publicly available information that suggests such a step. However, statements made by some people close to the company suggested the speculation.
Idea is third largest telecom service provider in India and it is owned by the Aditya Birla Group. It holds 11.3 per cent of the market share in the GSM division with a subscriber base of 65.3 million subscribers.
