Dutch insurer Aegon says it invested in failed US bank

Lehman Brothers Amsterdam - Dutch insurance company Aegon announced on Monday it had invested 125 million euros (183 million dollars) in failed US bank Washington Mutual.

Last week US federal regulators shut down Washington Mutual, the country's largest savings and loan bank, after its credit rating was downgraded to junk status.

Washington Mutual's banking activities were sold to US bank JP Morgan Chase for 1.3 billion euros (1.9 billion dollars).

Aegon did not indicate how much it expected to lose due to the US bank's bankruptcy. (dpa)
