Sydney, Jan 21: Even after being cleared by the Australian Federal Court and the country’s Government, Indian doctor Dr Mohamed Haneef, who was falsely linked to terrorists in July last year, has said that he had not yet finally decided whether he would return to Australia.

He said he looked forward to a judicial inquiry into his detention.

Only last week, the Australian Government had decided not to appeal against the Federal Court’s decision clearing the way for his to return to his place of work, the Gold Coast Hospital.

He said that he was targeted by the Australian authorities because of his race and religion.

"It might be just because I am an Asian Muslim. The Government needs to look into the matter of why I was arrested in the first place and whether there was any real, legitimate threat," an AAP report quoted the Indian doctor as saying in an interview with the ABC Radio.

He said he had never experienced any racism from colleagues or patients while working at the Hospital and his idea of Australia as a fair country had not been changed.

But he replied in the affirmative when asked if he had experienced a "little bit" of racism from the police.

Describing the case against him as "circumstantial", Dr Haneef said that he would very happily return to work at the Gold Coast Hospital, but had not yet made up his mind. He added that his wife, mother and his wife's mother were deciding whether they wanted him to return to work in Australia. (ANI)
