Down Syndrome Video starring Olivia Wilde sparks Controversy
In honor of the World Down Syndrome Day, Saatchi & Saatchi New York created an ad featuring renowned American actress Olivia Wilde. The main motive was to encourage understanding of Down syndrome. A number of people praised the ad titled ‘How do you see me?’ and Wilde.
Many people who believe the advertisement didn’t serve its original purpose have criticized the ad agency and the actress.
People against the ad said Wilde has got too much attention in the video clip, and the girl with the condition is given the back seat. The ad was supposed to be about the girl who is having Down syndrome, but the makers have focused on the actress, they added.
The short clip was narrated by a 19-year-old girl, AnnaRose Rubright. She tells how life of a person with Down syndrome actually is. Wilde is portraying the teen’s experience in the video. She can be seen enjoying with her family, doing daily chores and many other things.
Shortly after the video was released, a woman with an undisclosed disability named Emily Ladau spoke against it. She said, “Why couldn’t AnnaRose portray her own life? Why couldn’t she be shown dancing, laughing, sitting on the couch with a loved one, walking on the beach with family? If she says that she sees herself doing these things, why isn’t she literally seen doing them?”
A number of Twitter users came in support of Ladau. A user, David M. Perry, said people living with Down syndrome are the best individuals who don’t need to look like an actress such as Olivia Wilde.
However, many others praised the ad agency and Wilde for telling how people with the condition live their life. The video shows people with Down syndrome also have same life and dreams like everyone else.
