DOH issues warning over infected organs for transplants

DOH issues warning over infected organs for transplantsUK's Department of Health has issued a new warning after it was found that the solution, in which most organs meant for transplants, was infected with bacteria.

Several transplant patients might be at the risk of dangerous infections due to contaminated organ transplants solutions. The liquid used to transport organs, Viaspan was found to contain the bacillus cereus bacterium. The bacteria cases vomiting, stomach cramps and on severe cases even death.

The solution is used for saving liver, pancreas and bowel transplants. According to estimates, about 1,100 patients undergo such operations in the country every year. The authorities have said that the risk is low and no cases of adverse impact as surfaced.

The government has also said that it will continue to use the same solution any other type of solution is not available at present. It pointed out that if it does take the risk, the patients could face serious issues due to the lack of organs of transplants.

Chief Medical Officer Professor Dame Sally Davies said, "Our priority is to ensure patients are safe. There is currently no evidence of any problems in patients who have recently had transplants where Viaspan has been used."
