Doctors are required to put reason for every test

Doctors are required to put reason for every testDoctors prescribed various expensive tests to the patients describing no sufficient reason for the test which lead to various confusions. Observing these patterns of doctors, Union health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said that doctors are not allowed to order for expensive lab test, they will have to describe proper and justified reason for the same.

Mr. Azad told news agency DNA that doctors will be required to give explanations and give justified reasons for why they have prescribed specific test or had asked the patient to be admitted in the hospital when patient is not serious. He further added that every information should be put in records, nothing should be hidden and he needs to specify reason before prescribing certain test.

He also said that doctors cannot simply order for a specific test, every patient can use the Right to Information Act to find the reason for lab test and hospital admissions. It is not ethical on the part of hospitals and doctors to charge unfairly from the patients, there has to be some concrete reason behind the charges. He pointed out an example for instance a patient is ordered to undergo an ultrasound or MRI, different clinics are charging different rates within the same locality. He said that the major focus of health ministry is on drawing up rules for the doctors to increase their accountability.
