Dibrugarh University announces strict action against raggingDibrugarh University authorities, taking stern action against student indulged in ragging, have awarded exemplary punishment to 10 students on the recommendations of a special enquiry committee set up by the university. These students have already poor track record, and were suspended temporarily from hostel and attending classes in past too.

Dr KK Deka, the Vice Chancellor of the University, addressing media persons at the conference hall of the Administrative Building of the University, said that the university will not allow indiscipline on any sort in the campus, warning students against ragging their juniors.

Mr Deka reflected, "Our objective is not to punish students but to stop ragging. We want a general awareness about ragging among students. Therefore, we have decided to start counseling sessions using the services of psychologists."

The university announced the punishment on the basis of varying degrees of offence to the students. Madhav Kachari of Department of Commerce has been expelled from the campus, making him non-eligible to take admission to any other institution. Manash Pratim Gogoi of Department of History has expelled from the hostel, besides being fined Rs 10000.

The VC added, "The five students, Mintu Jyoti Kalita, Manoranjan Kalita, Lonee Dowerah, Minakshi Borah and Ranoj Pegu, have also been debarred from participating in any national meet or youth festival representing the university. If they were receiving any scholarship or fellowship, from now onwards they will longer enjoy such benefits."
