Democrats to probe whether ex-New York Governor Spitzer was unfairly targeted

eliot_spitzer_resignsWashington, Nov. 27 : House Democrats overseeing the Wall Street bailout will investigate whether federal officers unfairly targeted former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer for hooking up with hookers.

The House Financial Services Committee inquiry could lead to public hearings when Congress reconvenes in January, Fox News reported.

It will focus on how and why a Treasury Department enforcement unit uncovered Spitzer''s financial transactions with the pricey Emperors Club VIP escort service, congressional sources said Tuesday.

"This is not about Eliot Spitzer, but about whether the feds targeted him under GOP pressure using anti-terrorism powers under the Patriot Act to dig through bank records,” a committee source said.

Republican Committee member Pete King described the probe as a waste of time.

"I would hope the Financial Services Committee would put its main effort into resolving the financial crisis before getting involved with Eliot Spitzer and the Emperors Club," King said. (ANI)
