Daily Table aims to Serve Healthy and Affordable Meals to Low-Income Families
On Thursday, a nonprofit supermarket, Daily Table, opened in Dorchester with an aim to offer healthy and cost-effective meals to low-income families.
Former Trader Joe's President Doug Rauch has opened the grocery store located at 450 Washington Street. Rauch wants to bring a decline in food insecurity and food waste at the same time. The supermarket sells surplus foods or the ones nearing their 'sell-by' dates.
Rauch was quite frustrated over the amount of food going into bin just because they are nearing sell-by date. Firstly Rauch said he would open the store in September 2013, but then things changed and the store opened on Thursday.
The store is selling canned vegetables two for $1 and a dozen of eggs for 99 cents. The rates are so less as they are being donated by food wholesalers, markets, farmers, manufacturers and food distribution. After receiving food items from them, they are sold at cost or with a modest rise to consumers. The sales are meant to cover the cost required to run the store.
The supermarket also offers pre-made meals like soups and pastas. They have to be cooked as per a set of health guidelines developed by nutritionists. It shall, however, be noted that the store is membership based and customers have to provide their ZIP codes to do shopping. The market timings are from 11 am to 8pm.
Daily Table is also cooking up prepared meals on rotational menu. "The recipes have to change every day because the donations change every day", said head kitchen chef Ismail Samad.
