Criticizing U.S. officials a 'poor judgment' by McChrystal, says Obama

Barack-ObamaGen. Stanley McChrystal "showed poor judgment" in criticizing U.S. officials in a magazine article, President Barack Obama said on Tuesday.

According to the official reports, speaking after a Cabinet meeting at the White House, Obama said he and Defense Secretary Robert Gates will meet Wednesday with McChrystal, the top military commander in Afghanistan, to talk about comments he made in a profile in Rolling Stone.

In the article, scheduled to go public Friday, McChrystal spoke disparagingly about members of the Obama administration, from the president on down, involved with the policy on Afghanistan.

The president said, "I think it's clear that the article in which he and his team appeared showed a poor, showed poor judgment. And, but I also want to make sure that I talk to him directly before I make any final decisions."

People should "keep in mind what our central focus is, and that is success in making sure that al-Qaida and its affiliates cannot attack the United States and its allies," Obama said.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters at the daily White House briefing Obama was angry when he saw the Rolling Stone article.

Gibbs said, "I gave him the article last night. And he was angry."

Gibbs further added that what bothers Obama most, is the distraction of an "enormously vital mission for our country and for our armed forces. We're at an important time in seeking to make progress in a country that we have been in for a number of years."

Gibbs also said that the focus should be on the work of the U.S. forces, implementing policy and "creating the security and the governance environment that allows our good men and women to come home." (With Inputs from Agencies)
