Cost cutting measures of Sealord disliked by workers
As per the media reports, generous voting has been done by the workers at Sealord's Nelson plant against cost cutting measures put forward by the company.
The aim of the fishing operator is to save a sum of $1.8 million, which it can do by changing the terms and conditions of staff contracts.
The fish processing operation is being transferred by Sealord to a sea freezer-trawler from its factory at the Vickerman St. which will see cutting of 130 jobs.
It was expressed by Neville Donaldson from the Service and Food Workers Union that after conducting a survey of members, it has come to vision that 80 percent are against the amendments, despite Sealord threatening to close the processing plant.
He said that members have chosen to lose their jobs than to give into the demands.
Mr. Donaldson said that the norm has bucked up Sealord as the company is threatening workers with dismissal if they don't give up noteworthy terms of employment, which would let the company to increase their profit by $9.9 million dollars. This comes at a time when most companies are hunkering down for tough times.
Mr. Donaldson concluded, “We are still hopeful that the company will see sense and appreciate the several millions of dollars additional profit they have gained from restructure already in the last three months.”
