Compounds in green veggies combined with selenium can protect against melanoma

Compounds in green veggies combined with selenium can protect against melanomaRecent study revealed that compounds found in green veggies such as cabbage and broccoli combined with selenium can help in fighting melanoma. Earlier studies have shown that drug made from the broccoli and cabbage compounds will require impractical amount of these compounds. Recent study showed that capability of these compounds can be boosted by adding selenium. Animal models showed that new drug made from this combination can be delivered intravenously in low doses. Research team also believed that sunscreen lotion having these compounds can be produced to prevent melanoma.

Professor Gavin Robertson, of the university's College of Medicine, said up until now there has been no drugs that target proteins which trigger melanoma.

He added: "We have developed drugs from naturally occurring compounds that can inhibit the growth of tumours in mice by 50 to 60 per cent with a very low dose."
