Germany readies 600 troops to guard NATO summit Berlin  - Germany is providing 600 soldiers to help protect next week's NATO summit, the government said in a written parliamentary response disclosed Wednesday.

Their duties would include providing first aid and helping guard the 3,500 delegates against potential attacks from atomic, biological or chemical weapons, the statement said.

Some 15,000 German police will be on duty during the gathering from April 3-4 in the towns of Baden-Baden and Kehl in Germany and Strasbourg in France.

NATO soldier killed in southern Afghanistan

NATO soldier killed in southern Afghanistan Kabul  - A foreign soldier serving with NATO forces was killed in an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan Sunday, according to military sources.

The attack brings to seven the number of NATO soldiers killed in Afghanistan in the past three days.

The soldier, whose nationality was not revealed in the statement, died of wounds he sustained in "a hostile incident," the International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) said in statement.

Spain says it is ready to delay troop pullout from Kosovo

NATO Secrteary General Jaap de Hoop SchefferMadrid  - Spain indicated Sunday it was willing to put on hold an announced pullout of troops from the NATO peacekeeping force in Kosovo after criticism from other alliance members.

Defence Minister Carme Chacon is to hold talks in the next few days with NATO Secrteary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, defence ministry sources said.

While Spain was sticking in principle to its planned withdrawal, there would be a "certain flexibility" about the timing, the sources said. Press reports said Sunday Madrid was considering keeping its troops in place for another year.

By a vote of 329 to 238, the deputies passed a vote of confidence in the foreign policy conducted by Prime Minister Francois Fillon and his government, including the decision to return to full NATO membership.

In 1966, then-president Charles de Gaulle pulled France out of the alliance's military command and evicted US bases from French soil.

Nine killed in combat in AfghanistanKabul  - One NATO soldier, two Afghan police, five Taliban militants and a civilian were killed in a series of clashes in southern and eastern Afghanistan, officials said Sunday.

A roadside bomb targeting Kandahar city's mayor killed one bystander and wounded six other civilians on Sunday morning, Abdul Khaliq, a senior police official in the province, said.

The bomb in a push-barrow damaged the mayor's vehicle, but he escaped unharmed.
