Climate Change will have Devastating Effects on Australia's Food Supply
According to a new report, climate change is going to have destructive effects on Australia's food supply. The report named 'Appetite for Change' reveals that the taste of meat, vegetables and grains could change due to climate change.
The report also revealed that quality of these food items will also be impacted. Rising temperatures will also particularly affect dairy. David Karoly, co-author of the report, said that because of climate change the amount of bush fires and heat waves have been increased. The rise in heat-waves and bushfires poses major threat to agricultural regions of Australia.
"It's definitely a wake-up call when you hear that the toast and raspberry jam you have for breakfast, for example, might not be as readily available in 50 years time", said Richard Eckard, Associate Professor from the University of Melbourne.
Eckard said global warming is actually affecting the things that are being used in daily lives like majority of common foods that people consume for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute and researchers from the University of Melbourne released the report. The report also reveals the recent research on the impact of climate change on the quality and price of food in Australia in future.
Co-author David Karoly, professor of the University of Melbourne, said that increase in heat waves is affecting farms across southern and eastern Australia and will worsen in the future if proper actions will not be taken at right time.
