Climate change to impact Monsoon in the coming two centuries
According to a new study, climate change is likely to affect monsoons in the coming 200 years posing risks of increased flooding in the country.
Experts say that the monsoon could fail every five years between 2150 and 2200 due to continuing affects of global warming and related shifts in tropical air flows on the planet.
Anders Levermann, a professor of dynamics of the climate system and one of the authors at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research said that monsoon failures might become more frequent in the coming years.
The monsoon season in the country is vital for the country's1.2 billion people as they depend on the rains for irrigation and it also fills up water reserves in the country. The country had faced a severe drought in 2009 and it had to start importing commodities that are generally grown in the country.
Monsoon failure is defined as a shortfall of rainfall of between 40 and 70% below normal levels. The study predicted a temperature rise of 4.6 degrees C over pre-industrial times by 2200.
The study has been published in the journal Environmental Research Letters.
