CL match in Athens to go ahead as planned Tuesday despite riots Athens - A crucial European Champions League match between Panathinaikos Athens and Anorthosis Famagusta was due to go ahead as planned on Tuesday night after security guarantees were given by the authorities in the riot-plagued Greek capital.

The European Football Union UEFA gave the nod after meeting earlier in the day with police representatives and officials from both clubs.

Widespread riots erupted on Saturday shortly after the shooting of a 15-year-old boy by a police officer in Athens and quickly spread to all corners of the country. Athens and other cities have been crippled by arson and looting.

The boy's funeral was scheduled for later Tuesday in the seaside Athens suburb of Paleo Faliro, which could trigger another day of violence.

Also on Tuesday, Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis was due to hold an emergency meeting with President Karolos Papoulias and the leaders of Greece's political parties.

The match between Panathinaikos and Anorthosis was set to kick off at 1945 GMT in the Olympic stadium which is sold out with 60,000 fans due to attend. The outcome will determine which team will advance into the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The game's referee team was unable to inspect the venue as planned on Monday due to the riots. (dpa)
