Chinese dissident accepts invitation to visit Taiwan

Rebiya KadeerTaipei  - Exiled Uighur Chinese dissident Rebiya Kadeer has accepted a Taiwan human rights group's invitation to visit the island in December, the group said Wednesday night.

Freddy Lin, leader of the "Guts United, Taiwan" group, extended the invitation to Kadeer at her office in the US capital Washington Wednesday morning. Exact dates of the visit have yet to be fixed, the group's secretary-general Chiang Chi-kang told the German Press Agency dpa.

"Kadeer was very happy to receive the invitation and looked forward to visiting Taiwan," Chiang said.

However it is not clear if the Taiwan government, which has recently irked China by approving the visit of the Dalai Lama and the showing of a film on Kadeer, will risk irking China again by granting Kadeer's visit.

Taiwan authorities have said that they would process the application for Kadeer's visit according to regulations.

Kadeer is considered by China as an inspiration behind ethnic riots that took place in the Uighur-majority province of Xinjiang in western China in July.  dpa
