Child shooting by police prompts a rally in Detroit
Activists have said that in response to an alleged police shooting of a child, a Peace Rally to Heal Detroit drew hundreds in a march to "take a hold of their city."
The Detroit Free Press reported that the Saturday rally allegedly began "as a mere thought" in the mind of activist and rapper Al Nuke, after Detroit police allegedly shot 7-year-old Aiyana Stanley-Jones while raiding a home.
The intent of the march and rally was to "start and ignite" black men to stop the violence and include the community and all generations in dialogue, Nuke said.
The newspaper further reported that LaKeisha Harris, a community activist with the Heal Detroit Coalition, took Nuke's idea, organizing the event and posting the details on social media sites.
He was exhilarated by the participation and size of the crowd, said Ron Scott, spokesman for the Coalition against Police Brutality and march and rally co-organizer.
He further said, "This is the face of the new Detroit, the face of new leadership of Detroit. These are young people who have decided they are going to take a hold of their city." (With Inputs from Agencies)
