Chelsea and Spurs maintain winning starts

London - Chelsea moved ahead of Tottenham on goal difference at the top of the English Premier League on Saturday as both sides claimed their fourth wins in as many games.

Both sides sit at the top of the table with 12 points after Chelsea strolled to a comfortable 3-0 win over Burnley at Stamford Bridge in the day's early match before Spurs responded to claim a late 2-1 victory over Birmingham City.

Goals from Nicolas Anelka, Michael Ballack and Ashley Cole gave Chelsea a regulation victory over newly promoted Burnley.

The away side, who stunned Manchester United in the first week of the season, held out for almost 45 minutes at Stamford Bridge but Anelka bundled in the first goal on the stroke of half-time.

Ballack then doubled the lead two minutes after the break with a header from a Frank Lampard pass and Cole smashed in the third five minutes later with a brilliant volley.

Chelsea captain John Terry praised his team's effort and commitment in claiming the win.

"The overall performance, the work-rate, working for each other all over the pitch shows we are desperate to win this Premier League.

"In the first half we had a lot of chances and maybe should have scored more. They made it difficult and overall I thought we were fantastic", said Terry.

Tottenham matched Chelsea's start with their own fourth successive win of the season. A late goal by Aaron Lennon gave Harry Redknapp's team a 2-1 victory over Birmingham City at White Hart Lane.

Spurs took the lead in the second half through a Peter Crouch header but that was wiped out as Lee Bowyer equalised from close range.

In the fifth minute of injury time minute Aaron Lennon claimed a last gasp victory for the home side with a powerful shot that beat Birmingham keeper Joe Hart at the near post.

Elsewhere, Liverpool came from behind twice to record a crucial 3-2 win over Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium.

Despite early pressure from Liverpool, it was the home side that took the lead just after the half hour as Kevin Davies's scored from close range after the Liverpool defence had failed to defend a corner.

Glen Johnson equalised shortly after for Liverpool with a low left-footed shot, but Bolton edged ahead again early in the second half through an excellent finish from Israeli midfielder Tamir Cohen.

Fernando Torres scored his third goal of the season to draw Liverpool level again before Bolton midfielder Sean Davis was harshly sent off.

Liverpool then piled on the pressure in search of the victory. The winning goal came ten minutes from time as captain Steven Gerrard smashed a magnificent volley past Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Dave Kitson's first Premier League goal for Stoke gave them a 1-0 win at home over Sunderland, while Wolves and Hull City played out a 1-1 draw and Blackburn could only share a goalless draw with West Ham United at Ewood Park.
