Carpathian wooden churches on World Heritage list

Carpathian wooden churches on World Heritage listWashington/Quebec City - Slovakia's wooden churches in the Carpathian Mountains, dating back to the 16th to 18th centuries, were added Monday to UNESCO's list of more than 800 World Heritage sites.

The committee meeting in Canada was ecumenical in its designation, naming two Roman Catholic, three Protestant and three Greek Orthodox churches that were built in poor villages in an area once known as Upland Hungary.

"The property presents good examples of a rich local tradition of religious architecture, marked by the meeting of Latin and Byzantine cultures," the committee said.

The committee also mentioned significant interior decorations on the walls and ceilings that added to the buildings' cultural significance. (dpa)
