Car Wash Companies should adopt other alternatives to Hydrofluoric based products
On the basis of a study carried out by the Washington Department of Labor and Industries, the Centers for Disease Control has published a report that has unveiled that chemicals used in commercial truck and car wash are harmful for workers.
In the study, the researchers have assessed workers' compensation reports from 2001 to 2013. After assessing the reports, the researchers came to know as many as 48 workers were burned due to car wash products that were having the chemical hydrofluoric acid.
Out of 48 workers, seven were hospitalized and three suffered third-degree burns. Two workers required surgery for the burns. In one of the injury cases, a worker accidentally splashed the chemical on his leg while putting solutions in different containers.
One of the workers also died after consuming some of the product. Ingestion of the chemical hydrofluoric acid can lead to corrosive chemical burns and potentially fatal systemic toxicity. Therefore, it is important to find alternate to the chemical.
Out of all, the most injured workers included car wash workers, auto detailers and truck wash workers. The injured workers also included women and the average age of injured workers was 29. Majorly, the burns were suffered to the head, eyes and hands.
The matter is being debated a lot and it has been suggested that car wash companies should implement other alternatives for hydrofluoric acid based products. It has also been suggested that workers should wear protective gloves to prevent health hazards involved.
