Campus violence leaves one killed, many injured in Bangladesh
Dhaka - Authorities ordered the indefinite closure Friday of three educational institutions in the northern Bangladeshi city of Rajshahi after bloody clashes between rival student groups left one person killed.
The clashes broke out between the student fronts of the ruling Awami League and opposition Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami over establishing control over Rajshahi University campus.
Sharifuzzaman Nomani, general secretary of the local unit of Bangladesh Chhatra Shibir, the student front of Jamaat, was killed in the clashes which broke out late Thursday. Police arrested 74 Shibir activists, including 13 outsiders.
Bangladesh Chhara League, the student front of the ruling party, accused their rivals for vandalising their rooms in the dormitories and using explosives to terrorise the campus.
Fearing more violence, the government decided to shut the university and two other institutions of the city - Rajshahi Medical College and Rajshahi College.
Resident students were ordered to vacate their dormitories, assistant proctor of the Rajshahi University Mostaq Ahmed said.
"Male students have been asked to vacate their halls Friday evening and the females by Saturday morning. The university is arranging buses for the students to leave the campus," he added. (dpa)
