Director General and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IATA, Giovani Bisignani, while addressing an interactive session in New Delhi today, said that one dollar increase per barrel of oil costs 1.26 billion dollars to the aviation industry.

Brit aviation authorities’ warning after exploding wheelchair incident

London, September 24 : In the wake of the recent exploding of an electric wheelchair shortly after a flight landed at Manchester, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has warned air passengers of the unlikely dangers their luggage may pose.

The incident occurred on September 7, when ground staff at the airport noticed blue sparks coming from the wheelchair, while they were unloading it from the hold of a Boeing 757.

The chair was removed from the aircraft, and immediately burst into flames.

“Thankfully no-one was injured as a result of the Manchester incident, but it does highlight the need for passengers to be extremely vigilant,” the Telegraph quoted Geoff Leach, manager of the CAA’s dangerous goods office, as saying.

Iberia stops historic flights between Madrid and Gibraltar Gibraltar  - The Spanish airline Iberia will stop the historic flights between Madrid and the British enclave of Gibraltar, sources of the airline said Tuesday.

Iberia said the route was not profitable enough. The last flight was scheduled for Sunday.

The flights were part of a 2006 agreement lifting some of the restrictions of movement and telecommunications between Spain and the enclave which Madrid has claimed for three centuries.

The agreement included the joint use of Gibraltar airport.

Olympic Airways staff block airport runway in protest at sell-off

Athens - Hundreds of workers with Greek state carrier Olympic Airlines blocked the main runway at Athens International Airport Tuesday over plans to privatise the airline.

The demonstrators, including pilots, air stewards and technicians, prevented planes from taking off and landing on the runway.

Airport officials said the protest forced air traffic controllers to divert planes to a second runway. The demonstration did not affect any flights, they added.

Tuesday's airport protest was the second in one week.

The European Commission last week approved a government plan to privatise the airline while ordering the current company to pay back more than 1 billion dollars in illegal state aid.
