Black Widow Spider lands woman in hospital

A black widow spider has bitten a Vermont woman. Her family said that it was hiding in a bag of grapes.

The name of the 21-year-old Colchester resident was not disclosed. After being treated for the bite, WCAX-TV reported that the Colchester resident spent the night at the University of Vermont Medical Center.

Doctors released her from hospital on Saturday, after giving her some shots and they will monitor her health for the next few months.

While talking to WCAX, The woman's mother said that her daughter reached into a bag of grapes and the spider crawled up her arm. She soon found that she was bitten. She said that they caught the spider and brought it to the hospital along with them.

Representatives from the Shaw's supermarket that sold the grapes have mentioned that they are inspecting the produce in stores. It has contacted the suppliers to ensure that their products are safe. As a precaution, they have also decided to replace all the food in the family's refrigerator.

Black widow bites can lead to muscle aches and nausea. They can make breathing difficult but generally aren't lethal. Normally, the symptoms last for just a few days, but at times can go on for some weeks.

They are common in North America, nearly all species are located in warmer climates, besides the northern black widow, which can be found anywhere from southeastern Canada down through northern Florida.
