Birth of baby can put a strain on relationship of couples
It is known fat that birth of a child is accompanied by various adjustments which sometimes leads to friction between both parents. Recent study showed that children can prove a hurdle in enjoying martial life.
Researchers at the universities of Denver and Texas analyzed data collected from 220 couples over an eight-year period. Data analysis revealed that nine in ten couples have less 'marital satisfaction' after the birth of the first child.
Couples who lived together before marriage are worst affected with the birth of a child. Many couples feel a drift in their sexual life and finances with the birth of baby.
Denver University psychology professor Scott Stanley said: 'Couples who do not have children also show diminished marital quality over time. However, having a baby accelerates the deterioration, especially seen during periods of adjustment right after the birth of a child.'
Researchers found that birth of a baby causes more dissatisfaction in lower incomes couples and couples who had been married for short time. However some rich couples and couples who had been married for a long time feel birth of baby has strengthened their relationship.
Stanley added: 'While some lustre may be off marital happiness for at least a time during this period of life, there is a whole dimension of happiness and contentment based on the family that couples are building.'
