Birt Blast takes Tasmania to victory
Tasmania registered its first win in the WACA since 2006. They will now face the winner of Saturday's clash between Queensland and Victoria. A modest 232 run target was set in front of them and they never would have imagined it would be so tough to chase it. It was an unlikely win until Travis Birt played one of his best innings gathering 93 runs in just 99 balls ensuring a win for his side.
The side was left at a nervous 145/4 at one stage after Tim Paine departed at 57. Western Australia missed 3 chances of this talented opener. Paine got out trying to sweep Aaron Heal, the left-arm spinner. The side must have had butterflies in their stomach but Birt came to the rescue.
Tasmania's situation remained tight but Birt, hit eight fours and two sixes, was able to hold his nerve with Jason Krejza at the bottom who scored an important 22. The required rate was 8 in the last 2 overs but Brit ensured that not much is left for the last over hitting 2 boundaries; he scored 11 in the 49th over and sealed the win with a mid-wicket pull in the lat over.
