Berlin supports campaign against cluster munition
Berlin - Germany voiced official support Friday for a day of action around the globe on Saturday against cluster munition.
A Foreign Ministry statement said Berlin backs the objective of a total ban on the weapons, which scatter bomblets to explode over a wide area.
It said the weapons were especially lethal to civilians after a conflict because so many of the bomblets initially failed to explode.
The statement said Germany hoped an international conference at the end of next month in Dublin, Ireland would adopt a ban, with about 100 nations set to support the prohibition at the May 19-30 talks.
Saturday's protests are being organized by the Cluster Munition Coalition. (dpa)
