B.C.'s child welfare system facing economic crisis

B.C.'s child welfare system facing economic crisisRecent analysis showed various problems circling B.C.'s child welfare system. The report claims that although the cost of caring for such children is touching skies but still some children are not getting the care they really need.

The cost of caring for children in foster and group homes is increasing beyond the ministry's ability to pay, according to the Ministry of Children and Family Development report.

The report says: "An examination of children in care . . . revealed a system in crisis and in need of innovation."

The report puts shortage of skilled foster parents and rise in the number of children in care with severe needs as the reason behind the increasing costs.

Carole James, NDP Leader, called the report "appalling" and said last week's provincial budget failed to provide enough money to fix the problems.

She added: "This government has learned absolutely nothing about the most vulnerable children in our province and the premier should be ashamed."
