Baby Boy of Brain-Dead Mother Goes Home after staying Two Months in Hospital

Finally, the baby born to a brain-dead woman on life support has left hospital after two months for his new home with maternal grandparents in Waterloo, Nebraska.

On April 4, Angel Perez was delivered through Caesarean section. The baby was delivered 54 days after his mother, Karla Perez, was declared brain dead. Methodist Women's Hospital in Omaha said that in February, Perez, 22, already a mother of one, and pregnant with second baby, complained of having a headache.

She even collapsed in her home and suffered a brain hemorrhage. Dr. Andrew Robertson of Methodist Women's Hospital Perinatal Center said that medical check-up was done and Perez's baby was found to be absolutely fine.

Robertson said that the baby was too young to be delivered. They then had a discussion with her family members and they all agreed to try and provide somatic support in which Karla's pregnancy will be maintained till the time her baby reaches an appropriate gestational age.

After 54 days of being declared brain-dead, the team noticed that Karla's health was deteriorating. Therefore, they decided to deliver her infant. At 11.47 am, the baby was born at 30 weeks and three days. At the time of birth, baby Angel weighted 2 pounds and 12.6 ounces.

On April 6, Karla was declared dead and her organs were donated on April 9. "Not only does Karla's legacy live on through Angel, but also through the four individuals who benefited from her liver, two kidneys and her heart", said the hospital.
