Availability of healthy food and physical activity to fight obesity
The report recommended practical steps that can be taken by government to reduce obesity levels in its citizens. The soaring obesity level has become issue of concern for the government authorities.
Most suggestions in the new U.S report revolved around consumption and availability of healthy food along with increased amount of physical activity. Sedentary lifestyle and junk food consumption are the main factors behind increasing obesity levels.
The report stressed that all restaurants should post calorie counts as it helps people in making healthier choices. It recommended using zoning laws to restrict presence of fast-food restaurants, junk-food carts and billboards advertising unhealthy food near schools and play grounds.
The stores should be given incentives to stock healthier items. Supermarkets should be given tax incentives and other facilities to come down to underserved neighborhoods. Special tax should be put on junk food and soft drinks to reduce their consumption.
To boost physical activity school playgrounds should be open to the general public. Sidewalks, bike paths, playgrounds and parks should be built and maintained to ensure safe and comfortable outdoor activity. Programs allowing children to walk or bike to school safely should be created with the help of education department.
