August to see a new inflation index
In answer to all the controversies regarding the usage of improper base in calculation of inflation, the Industry Secretary RP Singh said that India will soon have a new system of inflation measurement. The new system will become operational from August.
It will be covering the price changes of 250 extra items over and above the already existing ones.
He said that the government is read with a new index and it will soon consider the new items. But before that the system needs approval from the Committee of Secretaries, headed by the cabinet secretary.
In the present system, wholesale price index is taken into consideration and in that 435 items are studied.
Singh said that the decision has been taken since the results were coming skewed and that the new system is expected to be more reflective of the actual inflation situation. Now, there are going to be 670 items.
The system, added Singh, has been studied by the experts and they have found it to be "quite consistent".
For the month of June, the inflation was said to be at 10.55 per cent.
