Astronomers discover 50 new planets outside solar system
A team of astronomers working on European Southern Observatory have discovered about 50 new planets out side our solar system.
The discovery is the biggest to be announced at once and about 16 of the discovered planets have the size similar to that of the Earth. HD 85512 b, which is 3.6 times the mass of Earth and is situated in the Vela constellation, is the biggest of the discovered planets.
HD 85512 b is located in its star system's habitable zone and is dubbed as one of the 'super-Earths'. This habitable zone is the area around a star, where water might exist in liquid form to support life.
The discovery was made by The High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS), which is installed at the European Southern Observatory's 11.8ft La Silla Observatory in Chile.
The new findings will be presented at the Extreme Solar Systems in Wyoming, U. S.
