Ashok Leyland posts 73.17% decline in sales in January
Hinduja Group owned automobile company, Ashok Leyland reported decline in sales in January due to slump in demand and high auto interest rates. The company sold 2,444 units of commercial vehicles in January 2009, registering decline of 73.17% as compared to sales figures of last year.
The company sold 2,026 units in the domestic market as compared to 8,477 units in the same period last year while it exported 418 units compared with 635 units, reporting decline of 34.17 per cent due to costly funds and reduction in consumer's spending in the midst of recessionary waves worldwide.
Its light commercial vehicle's sales also decline by 63.97 per cent to 49 units in January as compared to sale of 136 units in the same period last year. The firm marginally increased production during the period, hoping improvement in sales but worsening conditions of auto sector dashed its hopes.
