Apple plans to spend over $100 million in 2013 on building Mac computers in US

Apple plans to spend over $100 million in 2013 on building Mac computers in USAccording to a Bloomberg Businessweek report, citing the information shared by Apple CEO Tim Cook during the course of a recent interview, Apple apparently has plans underway to spend over $100 million in 2013 for building Mac computers in the US.

The proposed spending by Apple implies that the company is probably looking to shift a small portion of Mac production away from China, the country which has been assembling Apple products for years.

Though Apple had been manufacturing and assembling most of its devices in the US till the late 1990s, the company had moved the production to China, with the key objective of benefiting from the lower labor costs in the Asian country.

Since the planned spending for shifting the Mac production back to the US comprises only a small slice of Apple's $121.3 billion in cash, it is apparent that the move will not result in any substantial effect on the company's profit margins. Nonetheless, it implicitly shows that the US companies are under pressure to create domestic jobs, no matter how modest the number, in the wake of the fact that the country's current jobless rate is around 8 percent.

About Apple's decision to "bring some production to the US" next year, Tim told Bloomberg Businessweek: "This doesn't mean that Apple will do it ourselves, but we'll be working with people and we'll be investing our money."
