Ahmadinejad rejects nuclear talks with world powers

Ahmadinejad rejects nuclear talks with world powersTehran  - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday rejected nuclear talks with world powers and their September deadline for negotiations.

"Our stance is very clear: We only talk to the International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA] about the nuclear issue," Ahmadinejad said at a press conference.

"I don't know anything about a deadline, either, and believe that this term is no longer compatible to today's literature," Ahmadinejad added.

The president reiterated that talks with world powers would solely be focused on tackling "global challenges."

The six countries involved in the nuclear dispute with Iran - Germany and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - called on Iran to enter talks before the end of September or face tougher sanctions.

"The world powers should respect the Iranian position, and we hope that they do, but even if they do not, we will be prepared for both options," Ahmadinejad said, meaning cooperation and confrontation.

The president said Iranians would propose to the world powers a commitment to "global challenges" on the basis of equality and justice.

He said Iran wanted to amend the structure of the United Nations and the Security Council so that no longer would only a few countries dominate issues of global importance.

"As far as we are concerned, Iran's nuclear dossier does not exist and the Iranian nation does not allow anybody except the IAEA to interfere in the nuclear issue," Ahmadinejad said. "The door of talks with the world powers is closed."

"The [Western] opposition against our nuclear programme has no value at all for us," the president added.

He said Iran was more willing to talk to the world powers "to solve their problems." (dpa)
