Ahmadinejad: Iran ready for talks with US but changes needed

Ahmadinejad: Iran ready to react favourably to positive US signals Tehran- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday that Iran would be ready to talk to the new US administration of President Barack Obama but some fundamental changes were needed to make the talks fruitful.

"We are ready for talks, but these talks should be held in an atmosphere of equality and justice," Ahmadinejad said in a speech in Tehran on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution.

Obama said Monday that in the coming months, he was to look for ways to open direct talks with Iran geared toward developing a "relationship of mutual respect."

Ahmadinejad said Iran would be ready to cooperate with the United States in establishing regional and global peace but added that first some fundamental changes should be made.

"Important is that the dark era of the [former US president George W] Bush administration should not be repeated," the Iranian president said.

He asked that Bush and Israeli leaders be tried for being responsible for wars in the Gulf region and the Middle East and called for changes in the set-up of the United Nations Security Council for enabling a just and fair evaluation of world affairs and for widespread nuclear disarmament.

Ahamdinejad said Iran would then be ready to cooperate with the United States in its fight against global terrorism and drug trafficking. (dpa)
