An agreement between Sudan, Darfur rebels reached
An agreement have been reached on a framework for a cease-fire between Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and a main Darfur rebel group.
According the BBC reports, described as a power-sharing agreement brokered by neighboring Chad, the deal with the Justice and Equality Movement, signed in Qatar, is regarded as a significant step toward peace in Sudan although the nation's other main rebel group has declined to participate in talks.
The report further said that in addition, JEM has indicated it might not be able to comply with a mid-March deadline to finalize the cease-fire. Elections are scheduled for April.
The framework agreement was called "a very important step" by JEM leader Khalil Ibrahim but he said it will not be enough to bring peace to Sudan.
He said," The road to peace still needs much patience and honest concessions from both sides."
According to the report JEM said it would begin immediately to observe the terms of the cease-fire. (With Input from Agencies)
