Acceptance of Non-Marital Sex reaches All-Time High

A research at San Diego State University has unveiled that acceptance of getting sexually involved before marriage and homosexuality has reached an all-time high.

From 1972 to 2012, more than 33,000 individual were assessed in the data from the General Social Survey during the study. Study's lead researcher Jean M. Twenge said that after studying them, they came to know about a generational shift between beliefs in sex and sexuality.

Millennials born between the 1980s and 90s were found to be more accepting of premarital sex and same sex marriages than their parents. "The changes are primarily due to generation, suggesting people develop their sexual attitudes while young, rather than everyone of all ages changing at the same time", stated Twenge.

Study researchers said that they have noticed a significant change in people born between early 1990s and the ones born between 1940s and 50s. From 2000 to 2012, acceptance of premarital sex has increased 42% and acceptance of same-sex relationships has increased by more than triple between 1990 and 2012.

"Millennials are more accepting of premarital sex than any previous generation, yet have had fewer sexual partners than GenX'ers. This is consistent with their image as a tolerant, individualistic generation accepting others' choices and making their own", stated Twenge.

The researchers affirmed that their data was assessed before the federal ruling recognized same sex marriage. Amongst all, changes between 1972 and 2012 are the most generational. It can be said that many people develop sexual attitude at a young age.

Knowing the same, the researchers think that increasing cultural individualism in the nation could be associated with the shifts in attitudes.
