8.80 lakh children given polio drops in Mumbai
Health officials gave oral polio vaccine (OPV) drops to 8.80 lakh children, out of approximately 13 lakh across the city who come under the BMC’s purview. These children were vaccinated through 6,800 booths in the city under polio immunisation programme on Sunday. Health officials said that the turnout was better than the previous drive in July which had reported a 65 % turnout.
Dr Mangala Gomare, BMC's officer in charge of the polio immunisation programme said: "Our health workers will go house-to-house over the next five days to reach the kids who weren't vaccinated on Sunday.''
Dr Jayaraj Thanekar, civic executive health officer said, “We did not receive any support from the state government.”
He added: “Usually, we put up thousands of posters at key locations across the city, including bus stops and railway stations. The banners and posters put up a few days in advance do make a difference, which was not possible this time.”
