Yahoo to encrypt users' data in bid to thwart NSA spying

Yahoo to encrypt users' data in bid to thwart NSA spyingWashington, Nov 19 : Yahoo is reportedly going to encrypt all of its users' personal data that flows through its data centers across the globe, in a bid to save it from the prying eyes of world's surveillance agencies.

CEO Marissa Mayer announced that the company will be encrypting connections between its data centers beginning now and into the early part of next year.

According to AllThingsD, the move by the search engine comes amidst revelations by the NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden that the US spy agency had been tapping in the fiber optic connections of data centers belonging to Yahoo and rival Google for its mass surveillance programme called MUSCULAR.

Mayer said that Yahoo will institute 2,048-bit Secure Socket Layer encryption across its network for all Yahoo products by the end of the first quarter of 2014.

Users can also have the option of encrypting their data flowing to and from Yahoo products as well.

The report said that encryption by itself isn't sufficient to thwart the NSA or UK's GCHQ snooping but it slows down the process of breaking the codes by requiring more time and effort. (ANI)
