Will Lisbon Treaty pave way for spy state in Brussels?

Will Lisbon Treaty pave way for spy state in Brussels?London, Oct. 25 : If the Lisbon Treaty is approved this week, Britain will be powerless to prevent a spy state in Brussels, a new report had warned.

The report, by think-tank Open Europe, has warned that once the Czech Republic registers its support to the treaty, Europe will get its own secret service and store data on millions of citizens, the Daily Express reports.

European leaders hope to finalise the deal at their summit this week, with Czech President Vaclav Klaus expected to cave in and sign.

The treaty will open the door for Brussels to gain sweeping new powers over home affairs and justice.

The report warns this has ‘sinister implications for civil liberties.’

The British Government insists it will have an “opt in” policy, which will allow ministers to pick and choose which home affairs and justice issues to sign up to.

However, the report has branded this line a “smoke screen”.

“How can citizens expect their fundamental rights to liberty and independence from the state to be protected by institutions which are unelected and have a vested interest in creating new laws?” report’s author Stephen Booth wrote. (ANI)
