Volkswagen may open the Chakan plant to other automakers
After investing a whopping Rs. 4,000 crore into its plant, sources believe that the company is weighing the option of offer its Greenfield plant premises at Chakan near Pune to other automakers for contract manufacturing.
As per sources, Company already has two interested candidates in the form of home-grown Maruti Suzuki and Malaysian carmaker Proton. It is believed that since the production volumes have been low since it started operation in December 2009 at the plant, it has led the company to weigh options like contract manufacturing at its plant.
While the interest of Maruti Suzuki is clear as it is currently facing a supply demand mismatch in the Indian market, Proton is also looking at the Indian market in a bullish manner for a very long time.
However, there is still not any clarity on the final decision but it's believed that the decision will be benefiting for all the three parties. VW produces its Polo and Skoda Fabia and Polo at the Chakan plant. Notably, the company is also planning to gradually scale up the production of Polo at its plant.
